The Intelligent Systems Lab Amsterdam ISLA at the University of Amsterdam performs fundamental, applied and spin-off research. We define intelligence as observing and learning; observing the world by video, still pictures, signals and text and abstracting knowledge or decisions to act from these observations.

Center for Creation, Content and Technology (CCCT) Seminar

Under the CCCT umbrella, researchers from the humanities, the social and behavioral sciences, and the natural sciences collaborate in a multidisciplinary setting on information-rich research topics. CCCT is organizing a bi-monthly seminar in which one of the three faculties hosts speakers from the other two to report on research activities that are of shared interest.

Anne Schuth joins ILPS as a PhD student

Anne Schuth joins the ILPS group as a PhD student to work within the LiMoSINe project. Anne will be supervised by Maarten de Rijke.

New PhD student

Shangsong Liang joins the ILPS group as a PhD student to work on learning to rank in the context of social media. Shangsong will be supervised by Maarten de Rijke.

Two new PhD students COMMIT-P6 project

Svetlana Kordumova and Amirhossein Habibian have joined ISIS as PhD students. Svetlana will be working on mining online multimedia as training resource while Amirhossein will be working on interactive visual learning for the COMMIT-P6 project. They will both be supervised by Cees Snoek.

UvA Drone Team

Next week there will be the International Micro Air Vehicle Conference and Flight Compitition in the Netherlands. Our university will be present with the UvA Drone Team. The challenge of the competition is to let a small helicopter autonomously navigate through an unknown environment. An overview of the team-websites can be found here:

Visitor

ILPS welcomes Yoichi Hirai, from the CS department of the Univ. of Tokyo, who will be visiting ISLA from September until the end of March 2012. Yoichi will work with Maarten Marx on foundations of XML.
